About Mabel L. Chambers

Mabel L. Chambers was an educator in the Bessemer City Schools for over thirty years. She took great pride in shaping and influencing the lives of her students during her time as a teacher at Dunbar Elementary School. She was an advocate for education and strongly believed that education was key to a meaningful life. She was married to the late A.C. Chambers, Sr. who owned and operated Chambers Funeral Home. He provided services to families at a time when they needed it most, and together they served the community through philanthropic efforts.

The Mabel L. Chambers Endowment was established to honor her legacy by meeting the needs of those in the community and teaching them how to become self-sufficient.

Mabel spent her life in education.  She was a graduate of Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama where she obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Education.  She taught third grade at Dunbar Elementary School in Bessemer for over 30 years.  As an educator, she often provided students who were less fortunate with clothing, supplies and other items to make their learning environments easier to manage.  Outside the classroom, Mabel often helped others become self sufficient by educating them on life skills such as self-esteem, self worth, personal responsibility and presentation, and the need to serve others more than oneself.

After her retirement from the school system, Mabel worked part time at Chambers Funeral Home, Inc.,  a family business who’s foundation she helped shape and that is now successfully operated by the fourth generation of Chambers family members.

The legacy of Mabel L. Chambers has led, in part, to the establishment of several community service projects ran by Chambers Funeral Home such as:  an annual Back Pack Give-Away, the Mabel L. Chambers Scholarship, activity day at Terrace Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, the Salvation Army’s scarf, gloves and blanket give aways, Angel Tree projects, serving of meals at Jessie’s Place (Jimmy Hale Mission), the Black History Challenge at Abrams Elementary School, and other noteworthy community related events.

Mabel L. Chambers was devoted to education, the family business and service of others.
